What Should I Expect During My Facelift Consultation?

If you are considering a facelift, the best place to start is by scheduling a consultation. During your meeting, Dr. Bridges will discuss your goals and concerns and assess your physical and emotional health.

Please be prepared to provide your information about the following:

  • Any previous procedures or surgeries you’ve had
  • Current and past medical conditions
  • If you plan to lose more than five pounds
  • List of current medications, herbal remedies, or other treatments
  • Your expectations for your outcome
  • Your family medical history

Dr. Bridges will evaluate your bone structure and the underlying tissues of your face. Your skin thickness, texture, and elasticity as well as the severity of your wrinkles or folds will all be considered. Examining your hairline will help determine if the incisions can be placed discreetly. All of these factors will help Dr. Bridges create a customized surgical plan to achieve your aesthetic goals.

What Can a Facelift Achieve?

Tighter Facial Structure

During facelift surgery, Dr. Bridges restructures the underlying facial tissue. By tightening the deeper muscles, your appearance can be significantly enhanced.

Enhanced Breasts
Slimmer Figure

Smoother, Tighter Skin

Loose, sagging skin on your face can make you look older than you feel or really are. Excess skin is removed to reveal taut, smooth facial skin.

Youthful Facial Contours

Facelift surgery provides youthful, smooth skin and an improved facial structure. These changes can elevate your self-confidence and bring forth a renewed sense of identity.

Improved Confidence

What Does the Facelift Procedure Entail?

  • Step 1: Preparation

You will be given specific instructions several days prior to your actual procedure. These will guide you as you approach your surgery date and following your surgery. Several points will be covered, including:

    • Abstaining from smoking before and after your facelift
    • Aftercare instructions and what to expect
    • Arranging personal care after your procedure
    • Refraining from certain medications that may interfere with the surgery

  • Step 2: Incisions

Your facelift will be performed in an outpatient surgery center. During the process, our goal is to keep you comfortable, so medications will be administered. Typically, we use local anesthesia with sedation, and you will be asleep throughout the operation. Occasionally, a general anesthetic is used.

The technique chosen for your facelift depends on your features, your surgeon’s preferences, and your desired results.

There are many variations to the facelift procedure. However, the incision is typically hidden in the natural contours of the temporal hairline and extends down around the earlobe and back into the hairline. There also may be a small incision hidden beneath your chin.

  • Step 3: Tightening and Repositioning

Through the incisions, Dr. Bridges frees the facial skin from its underlying tissues and pulls it upward and back. The excess skin is removed, and deeper tissues are repositioned to restore a more youthful contour to your face. If necessary, an incision under the chin allows for the removal of fatty tissue and smooths the banding of underlying muscles in the neck.

Concerns

Recovery

Recovery

All of our patients recover in our patient recovery area. Bandaging may be wrapped around your face to help control swelling, and you will have immediate assistance available if you need it. In many cases, small drainage tubes are placed beneath the skin to help prevent fluids from accumulating. We can control any discomfort during this time with prescribed medication.

Although everyone heals at a different rate, you can expect that your recovery will follow this general timeline.

After the First Day:

In the early stages of healing, you should rest with your head elevated to minimize bruising and swelling. Ice packs or some other cooling device should be used to reduce swelling.

Within the First Week:

Stitches are removed or dissolve at this point. Bruising and swelling will reach its peak and then subside. Bandages will be removed, and you may shower. You may return to light activities, but continue to sleep with your head elevated. You can wear makeup to conceal any discoloration.

Within Two Weeks:

Most of your bruising should disappear. You may resume many of your normal activities, including non-strenuous work.

After Several Weeks:

You may resume exercising. Numbness in the facial area will diminish; however, some numbness may persist for several months. Bruising and swelling will continue to subside, and you’ll begin to see your results.

Throughout the healing period, you should avoid exposure to direct sunlight and, for the long term, be conscientious about using sunblock to protect your skin.

Results

Results

Our patients generally have a rejuvenated appearance when their faces heal and the final results take shape. Although the healing may take some time, you can expect the results to be worth the wait.

A number of factors, including your heredity and lifestyle, play a role in how long the results of your facelift will last. Even though the aging process continues, patients are usually happy with their appearance for many years following a facelift. Some patients find that they want to make additional improvements at a later time.

Pain

Pain

Any pain associated with your procedure can be alleviated with prescription medications. After the first few days, most patients feel almost back to normal.

Scars

Scars

Following surgery, the incisions can be easily concealed by your hair or with makeup.
