3 Minute Read:

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is used to improve the appearance and function of the tissues surrounding the eye itself. An eyelid lift will usually have a relatively quick recovery period, with most patients returning to work in as little as one to two weeks.

Just after your operation, you will likely experience some dizziness and difficulty thinking straight due to the anesthesia. This should fade within the first hour or two.

Your eyes may also feel tight, sore, itchy, or dry. These symptoms can be treated with oral medication, cold compresses, and/or eye drops. Talk with your surgeon to determine which treatments they recommend for your particular recovery.

What Will Happen the First Day After My Eyelid Surgery?

You should expect some eye irritation during the first few days of your recovery. It is vital that you do not rub your eyes or otherwise physically disrupt the healing tissues. A cold compress can treat many of these symptoms by numbing the area.

You should avoid activities that may induce eye strain such as reading, watching television, or using a computer. Many patients have found activities such as audiobooks or podcasts to be useful forms of entertainment during the first few days of recovery.

What Can I Do During the First Week of My Blepharoplasty Recovery?

During the first week of recovery, Dr. Bridges recommends avoiding activities that may cause eye irritation. These may include visiting sandy or dusty areas, such as beaches, sports fields, attics, deserts, and other areas, where particles may enter your eyes. If your stitches require removal, they should be removed after one week.

What Happens During the Second Week of My Eyelid Surgery Recovery?

By your second week of recovery, the most serious side effects should have faded. You will likely resume work, though some physical signs of the surgery may still be visible (usually bruising or minor swelling). By the end of the second week, most patients will see their initial results. You may also resume using products that affect your eyes, such as makeup and lotion, and participating in activities, such as swimming, gardening, and household chores that involve exposing your eyes to particulates or chemical vapors.

What Will My Final Eyelid Surgery Results Be Six Months After Surgery?

By the six month mark, you will see the final results of your eyelid lift. Depending on the area treated, you should see reduced wrinkles around your eyes, reduced or eliminated bags and fatty deposits, and reduced drooping or loose skin over your eyelids.
