3 Minute Read:

Choosing the right breast implant is not an easy task. One of the trickiest parts is choosing the right implant size (volume measured in cc’s).

a woman choosing the right breast implant for her breast enhancementMost women who consider breast augmentation think in terms of cup sizes. They come into their consultation saying, “I want to be a full-C or a DD.” Unfortunately, breast implants are not measured in cup sizes, which makes choosing the right size more difficult.

There are many factors to consider when choosing an implant, including size, shape, material, implant placement, and more. To learn more about these other factors, read Dr. Bridges’ post on the types of breast implants he offers.

What Is the First Step to Picking the Right Breast Implant?

Before you get to the nitty-gritty details, the first step is to figure out your end goal. For many women, this is just breast size, but there are other factors to consider.

Are you looking for a perkier breast? Have you considered how large you want your breasts relative to your body and chest size?

These are important questions you should consider before going in for a consultation. The clearer your end goal, the easier it will be for a plastic surgeon to help you meet it.

How Much Breast Enhancement Should I Get?

This is where we start getting into the details. Breast implants are measured in cubic centimeters rather than cup sizes, so patients should be prepared to discuss their goals with that in mind.

There is no hard and fast rule, but a 100 to 150 cc can usually increase most patient’s breasts by a cup size or more. This will vary depending on the size of the patient’s existing breasts, chest wall, and physical build.

It is crucial to get an implant that compliments your existing build. Oversized implants can lead to physical pain or look overly augmented. While this is the look that some women want, many are most pleased with implants that are balanced with their body shape.

It is important to discuss how the implants will complement your existing breast tissue. If your goals are realistic, Dr. Bridges can determine the best implant to achieve them.

How Are Breast Implants Measured?

Breast implants are measured in three ways:

  • Implant volume
  • Implant diameter at the base (implant profile)
  • Implant projection, how high from the base the implant peak is (implant profile)

These factors can dramatically affect how your breasts look after surgery. One of the most critical things to keep in mind while selecting an implant is that size isn’t everything. Implant profile is also important.

Implants with large diameters and low projection will increase the overall size of the breast and are ideal for enhancing cleavage. Implants with smaller diameters are better for enhancing the projection of the augmented breasts.

Additionally, if you are looking for tighter or perkier breasts, you may want to consider a breast lift surgery along with your breast augmentation
