3 Minute Read:

Facelift surgery is one of the most common surgeries performed worldwide. Unfortunately, the term “facelift” can be somewhat misleading.

Beautiful woman with perfect skin smiling beside water.Because it contains the word “face,” many people incorrectly assume that the surgery addresses the entire face, from the forehead to the chin. This is not true. A facelift only addresses the bottom two-thirds of the face (and is commonly extended to address the neck).

But what about the upper third of the face? Aging also occurs there. So, what do you do if you want to address that area?

If you are looking for complete facial rejuvenation, you will need to consider combining your facelift with another cosmetic procedure like blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery).

Understanding Your Facial Surgery Options

What Is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a plastic surgery technique that addresses laxity in the eyelids.

This surgery can be limited to the upper eyelids (upper blepharoplasty) or the lower eyelids (lower blepharoplasty). It can also be combined to address all four eyelids — which is very common.

  • Upper blepharoplasty: The goal of upper eyelid surgery is to address “hooding.” This occurs when the skin and muscles in the upper eyelid develop laxity. While some people only experience minor cases of this, where they may look a bit tired or worn out, others experience a great deal, and this hooding may even droop so low that it interferes with their peripheral vision. When this occurs, surgery is almost a necessity.

This technique trims excess skin and repositions or removes fat pockets in the upper eyelid through an incision along the upper eyelid crease.

  • Lower blepharoplasty: The goal of lower eyelid surgery is to address bags beneath the eyes that can cause you to look tired, stressed, or uninterested. Here, tissue and skin are removed or repositioned through an incision made just beneath the lower lash line.

For some patients who do not require skin removal, an incision can be made within the lower eyelid to avoid an external incision. Regardless, scarring is not typically a concern with eyelid surgery.

What Is Facelift Surgery?

Facelift surgery (rhytidectomy) is a facial rejuvenation procedure that tightens the tissues and skin on the lower two-thirds of the face and neck to restore the look of youthful vitality. This can minimize deep lines and creases (like nasolabial folds or marionette lines), lessen the appearance of jowls and vertical neck bands, and lift sagging facial tissues back to their original elevation.

The result is a younger, smoother, and refreshed facial appearance.

When to Combine Surgeries

As you most likely have realized, aging doesn’t only occur to specific facial features. It tends to hit all of them. Because of this, many people who want to address the signs of aging on their lower face most likely have aging skin around their eyes as well.

These patients are perfect candidates for combined procedures. Facelift and eyelid surgery can be performed simultaneously for complete facial rejuvenation that looks balanced and harmonious.

What Else Can Be Considered?

While facelift and eyelid surgery address many aging issues, you can choose to follow up this surgery with a non-surgical treatment to better your results even further.

BOTOX® Cosmetic can be used on the forehead and around the eyes to minimize the appearance of forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet, and frown lines.

Chemical peels can be applied to improve the texture and tone of the facial skin (something that a facelift does not do).
