3 Minute Read:

Liposuction is a plastic surgery procedure that helps remove pockets of stubborn fats from parts of the body that are difficult to trim with diet and exercise. While liposuction can be performed on nearly any part of the body, it is commonly used to address the abdomen, flanks, thighs, back, and arms.

While this body contouring procedure effectively sculpts and defines your silhouette, it is not necessarily a permanent treatment. This is because results must be maintained with a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise.

If you recently had a liposuction procedure, you are most likely enjoying your newer, tighter physique and wondering whether routine exercise is needed.

While liposuction removes selected fat cells from the body (which cannot regenerate), the procedure does not exempt you from gaining additional weight in the remaining fat cells (both in the treatment area and elsewhere).

Liposuction is a countering procedure, meaning without a healthy diet and a good exercise regimen, you will put weight back on.

How Soon Can I Exercise After My Liposuction Procedure?

Most plastic surgeons advise you to start or restart within a few weeks of your liposuction treatment.

While you don’t want to start vigorous or strenuous exercise immediately after liposuction, it is important to keep your blood moving by taking leisurely walks. The length and speed of these walks can be increased gradually as you continue to heal in the days and weeks following your liposuction surgery.

Most patients are healed enough to begin more active exercise programs within four to six weeks; however, we advise waiting until your plastic surgeon clears you.

What Are the Recommended Exercises Right After My Liposuction Procedure?

Light physical exercises: It is recommended that you engage in light physical activities, such as general household activities and easy walking. Crucially, maintain this level of exercise in the first one to two weeks after the procedure to avoid blood clots. During the first phase of recovery, strive to exercise at 25 percent of your normal effort.

Aerobic activity: Physicians also recommend light aerobic exercises involving walking in the days and weeks post-surgery. Be sensitive to your body’s signals, and don’t push beyond the level of comfort. You can resume higher impact activities — like running — six weeks after the procedure.

Resistance exercises: You can often resume resistance exercises two weeks after the surgery. Ensure you choose exercises that don’t impact the treatment area to guarantee quicker healing. As with aerobic exercises, resistant exercises should be entered gradually and increased depending on how your body responds.

Pro tip: Combining a good diet and gentle exercise can help you get desirable results after liposuction surgery. Some healthy foods to eat during recovery include healthy proteins, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and healthy fats. You should also drink a lot of water plus herbal and green teas. Avoid processed food, high-sodium food, sugary foods, and saturated fats.
